About The Unfettered Life

What’s here?

How to stay calm, be in control, break free and be here now. Articles on blogging, homebrew, online incomes and organic gardening. There’s psychology and neuroscience, some stuff about zen that neither you nor I understand, and a bit of zeitgeist.

More psychology. More science. Hypnosis. Weirdo wacky new age shenanigans, something about Socrates, or was it Aristotle? Dionysus, Bacchus, the other one, how to change who you are; why you can’t change who you are; how to break free – from jobs, people, ideas, limitations and  handcuffs.

We have Japanese Kanji and home-grown haiku.

You’ll learn how to concentrate, how to focus, why to focus, how to be in the zone, two more ways to be in the zone, how to make a plan, how to stick to a plan, how to stop thinking garbage all the time, how to notice that you’re thinking garbage all the time, how not to be a monkey, why you should be more like a dog, and the huge benefits to be gained from regularly sitting down and doing nothing.

We even have our very own martial art to unveil – a form of psychological self-defence.

Sometimes it’s busy, sometimes quiet. Sometimes both.

Sometimes there’s no one here. That’s a good thing:

“Moments of awakening arise of themselves, when the time is ripe. When nobody is around.

Nobody.”

James Austin – Zen & The Brain, ch 10

Where were we? Ah yes, what’s in it for you? Well, you might pick up some useful links to sites that are tightly focused on what they’re doing. Or something. Stick around, it could work out.

One thing is for sure, though, and that’s that this site will not give you definitive answers.

The site is called ‘The Unfettered Life’ and the topics are also ‘unfettered’. Wide ranging. Free. A bit random.

The name of the site comes from a book called ‘The Unfettered Mind’ written by Takuan Soho, a Japanese Zen monk of the 16th century. The reasons for that allusion should become clearer, over time. Maybe.

Who am I? Not telling. Mu could be a pseudonym, a nom de plume, an alias, a moniker, an AKA: what do you think? For the time being, this remains a semi-anonymous blog. That is not because I have anything to hide, and indeed anyone who wanted to find out who owned this site could do so in minutes, with a simple search. I am not putting my name on the site at present for two reasons:

1) I don’t want to

2) I don’t see why I should.

No, seriously, there really are two reasons:

1) So that I can write with greater freedom

2) So I can live with greater freedom.

We’ll see how that works out. I’m sure in time I will add my name and photograph. Don’t hold your breath in anticipation, however. There’s nothing very exciting to discover.

There are some things I do want to make clear, though.

Sometimes I write about Zen Buddhism, but I am no Zen Master, no Zen monk. All I know is from reading, and a little from some simple practice.

Sometimes I write about psychology, though I have no academic qualification.

Sometimes I’ve even been known to write about tennis, though I’m not very good at the game.

If you wish to know a little about me, however, I can disclose that I’m older than you, I live in a foreign country, I’m not famous, or rich, and I’m an atheist.

That’s it for now, though I leave you with a quote from Oscar Wilde:

“Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.”
